After I read J. D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy, I realized as well that my stories about Appalachia served as a counterpoint to Vance’s memoir. Instead of his tough love story in which the survivor leaves the region, I’d written a series of stories in which the survivors stay put and make the best of what has happened to them.
