The Back Flap
An EDUCATED child is a SAFE child!
If you were sexually abused as a child, did you know what was happening? Could it have been prevented? Who would you tell? How would you tell it?
These uncomfortable and provocation questions are the core of the book ABC’s of Child Sexual Abuse. Dr. Gloria’s inspiring one of a kind 3 in 1 “must-have” book for awareness, education, and prevention, written by a two-time survivor of child sexual abuse, Dr. Gloria’s book ABC’s Of Child Sexual Abuse is the first book from the series FAFA and GloGlo, this book goes beyond the censored conversation and offers a personal experience aspect that highlights common red flags of CSA. ABC’s of Child Sexual Abuse emerged with the idea to help children and parents know the truth and empower kids to speak out by providing you with information about body safety, warning signs, potential abuse signs, helpful tips to and innovative solution to help children understand what is allowed and what is inappropriate. Written in language children can understand, ABC’s of Child Sexual Abuse uses the 26 ‘universal’ letters with accompanying words, insightful images, crafted specific key messages, Dr. Gloria uses as an eye-opener to start these safety conversations when your kids are young. This astounding book is designed as a ‘dip in and dip out’ book which makes it easier to have these conversations often not just for parents but also for educators, and caregivers.
About the book
What is the book about?
The book ABC’s of Child Sexual Abuse is the first educational book from FaFa and GloGlo series that discusses the INS and OUTS of child sexual abuse through my experience as a survivor along with intensive training and educations on the topic of child sexual abuse.
When did you start writing the book?
August 9th 2018
How long did it take you to write it?
About 4 to 5 months
Where did you get the idea from?
I was initially working on my memoir and a big part of my story is the sexual abuse I endured from childhood, and as I was writing I kept thinking if I knew it was wrong, I probably would have told someone. I am a child advocate and case manager and I work with children and families in my spare time. I spread awareness, prevention, and education tips via social media and in person to my family & friends. Working with children and families, I realized how important it is for them to know everything they need to know about CSA, so I thought what if I was able to tell my story and help children and families start a hard but much-needed conversation through storytelling.
Were there any parts of the book where you struggled?
I struggled with putting too much information because it is a children’s book I have to be mindful to keep it simple.
What came easily?
Choosing the words to go with the letter of the alphabet.
Are your characters entirely fictitious or have you borrowed from real world people you know?
The characters are based on real people including myself
Do you have a target reader?
Parent & children, educators, professionals, and caregivers of children
About Writing
Do you have a writing process? If so can you please describe it?
No process, I would just write when something comes to mind in my phone notes and transfer it to word and clean it up.
Do you outline? If so, do you do so extensively or just chapter headings and a couple of sentences?
No outline. I literally just started typing.
Do you edit as you go or wait until you’ve finished?
I wait until I write all that I need for that particular letter before I edit
Did you hire a professional editor?
Yes.
Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what gets the fingers tapping?
Yes, I love music, I love reggae, kompa, r&b, soul, pop, country, I can write to all genres
About Publishing
Did you submit your work to Agents?
No, but I did speak with a few and some stated I would have to change a lot of things and others were not interested in the message of the book just me paying them to do things I was doing myself.
What made you decide to go Indie, whether self-publishing or with an indie publisher? Was it a particular event or a gradual process?
I wanted total control over everything from marketing, to promo, to cover, and to keep all my royalties. In addition, I wanted to learn the process of publishing and network with other authors, writers, illustrators, and so on. I look at the book as one of many to come and my vision for my company is bigger than having a traditional publishing company do it all. With social media being so big, the indie world is so much more supportive and the resources are out there.
Did you get your book cover professionally done or did you do it yourself?
Professionally done
Do you have a marketing plan for the book or are you just winging it?
At first, I was winging it but the more I learn I decided to put a marketing plan together to be able to reach a bigger audience as for sponsors and donations
Any advice that you would like to give to other newbies considering becoming Indie authors?
Research, Research, Research, download free or paid checklist/ toolkits for indie authors. Plan ahead what your mission and vision would be and how to get there. Make sure to connect with other authors, join clubs, and fb pages. Invest in a good book editor and illustrator, before buying merch. Be sure to establish a platform whether it is on FB, IG, Twitter, or a website and don’t be afraid to blog your journey. Do the important task first such as copyright, ISBN, LCCN (if applies), secure a team, know who you want to print your books or which website you will use. Lastly, HAVE FUN, and know you will make mistakes but you are in control.
