The Back Flap

Lessons I’ve Learned is a poetry book on the topics of life and love. Honest, raw, and captivating, the book is a collection of poems that all poetry lovers can enjoy.

About the book

What is the book about?

It’s a poetry book on the topics of life and love.

When did you start writing the book?

I started writing the book when I was in the middle of completing my bachelor’s degree and completed the book right before I finished working on my bachelor’s degree.

How long did it take you to write it?

A year to a year and a half.

Where did you get the idea from?

Great poets with poetry collections such as Rita Dove, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, and Emily Dickinson.

Were there any parts of the book where you struggled?

No

What came easily?

Writing the poems was easier than editing them, revising them, and arranging them in a poetry collection.

Are your characters entirely fictitious or have you borrowed from real world people you know?

There are no characters in my poetry book, but there are fictitious characters in books that I’m working on now. Some of the characters’ personality traits are borrowed from real world people I know.

We all know how important it is for writers to read. Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write and, if so, how have they influenced you?

Karen Kingsbury, Flannery O’Connor, and Mark Twain have influenced how I write. I strive to have Christian themes in some of my short stories such as Kingsbury’s books, my work has moral lessons in them like O’Connor’s does, and I strive for my works to be witty like Twain’s are.

Do you have a target reader?

My target reader for my poetry book is millennials, but it varies from book to book seeing how I write in different genres.

About Writing

Do you have a writing process? If so can you please describe it?

First, I brainstorm what the work will be about, then I create the poem’s rhythmic pattern or the world my characters in short stories live. Then, I create characters for my short stories and character sketches for them all.

Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what gets the fingers tapping?

No, I don’t listen to music while I write. I need complete silence and or solitude when I write.

About You

What are you working on now?

I’m simultaneously working on a Christian fiction short story collection and a YA/Children’s fantasy short story collection.
